Honduras
Together, Planting A Forest.
- Plant a tree in Honduras to help restore beautiful landscapes with local communities. Since 1990, around 45% of Honduras’ natural forests have disappeared. Miraculously, Honduras is still dotted with hotspots of biodiversity, providing homes for macaws, jaguars, and giant iguanas. Within the forestlands of the mountainous Nombre de Dios region, deforestation has put these hotspots under threat. In addition, Honduras’ dry corridor region is highly vulnerable to extreme weather events. But now we have an opportunity to restore some of the areas that have been damaged to help the forests thrive again! This project is a collaboration of One Tree Planted, Rainforest Alliance, and local communities.
- Through the Honduras Reforestation Project, Rainforest Alliance and One Tree Planted seek to restore deforested and degraded land in two regions of the country by planting 500,000 trees of varying native species. This project focuses on repairing critical ecosystems, improving the quality and availability of water, increasing rural farmer productivity, diversifying farmer incomes, and establishing long-term ecosystem restoration activities with the community, including the creation of community nurseries and training community members on sustainable forest nursery management.
- A personalized tree certificate (see gallery) to say thanks for your donation. We’ll also send you reports on our Honduras project, so you can track the impact your trees are having on the community and environment.
- To maximize the impact of your donation, our partners will determine the most appropriate native species of tree to plant, depending on the time of year. This project primarily focuses on planting exotic hardwoods in order to restore forests damaged by illegal logging, and shade-dependent cacao plants, which will diversify income for local farmers. Species include mahogany, cedar, guanandi, bully tree, pouteria, sweetgum, evergreen tree, chewstick, velvet tamarind, and allspice.

WHY PLANT TREES?
Stabilize climate
Forests are an essential part of our planet’s carbon and water cycles. A fully grown tree can release hundreds of liters of water in one day! Reforestation will improve the availability and quality of water, and help stabilize the climate of the dry corridor.

Honduras is considered the 5th biodiversity hotspot in the world, with over 1200 known species of amphibians, birds, mammals, and reptiles. Healthy forests provide habitat for rare and endangered species.
